Hey guys, got a problem with 2002 ranger 4x4 4.0 v6. On start up does just fine, then get up to about 55 mph od light starts flashing and at that point shifts hard from 1st to 2nd. Every thing else is fine. I can shut off for a short time and restart everything fine again until I get back up to speed then od light comes on again with same problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello Rebel and welcome to the forum! I did a quick Google search and it appears there are various things that can cause that behavior. Could be as simple as changing the fluid and filter all the way to a full rebuild. Best bet would be to take it to a transmission shop (yeah, I know how expensive that can be).
I'm curious too. I got on an on ramp a couple of weeks ago and the same thing happened. No overdrive. The OD light flashing. I pulled over and tried to get it to change. Nothing worked until I shut it off to get gas. When I started it back up all was fine. Hasn't happened since.
Thanks for the info. I may try changing the two speed sensors first before taking to the shop. I was told that could cause these symptoms. Hope for the best. GOD bless.
Update on my problem, I replaced both sensors on tranny, that is the out put and the input. Also added a little Lucas to tranny, and problem went away. Hope this may help someone else. Thanks guys and GOD bless!!!
This exactly matches the symptoms that just started with my 2000 XLT 3.0 Extended Cab last Tuesday evening. A hard shift to second, and flashing OD/Off light. Shut it off and started it up again a few times, and though the shifting is always an issue, the OD/Off light doesn't start flashing for several minutes. Also, once the light starts flashing, I only have 2nd or 3rd gear from a stop and no OD. A little research on the web seems to indicate the sensors, a seal, or the shift solenoid are the most likely culprits short of real ($$$) problems. This truck has had a LONG-LIFE and is at 224K miles (I bought it with 28K miles in 2001), but I hoped to coax out another year and a half out of it until I finish graduate school. I do about 2,500 local miles (<50 mile radius) a year now, so I'm looking for a good band-aid or cheap legit fix. I last checked the transmission fluid several hundred miles ago and have seen no drips. The fluid and filter were done YEARS ago (around 100K) with a flush, which was by choice. The mechanic said he wouldn't have recommended it, but that it ended up being the RIGHT THING after doing it... The fluid and filter may have been done once since, but it would have been before it reached 160K miles in 2007-2008. I've had ZERO time to look at it since Tuesday, and I'd love advice on the order of attack. Presuming the fluid is still clean and not burnt, I'll start replacing parts to see if I find the solution. Suggestions / Opinions? Thanks in advance.
