Hello, I hope somebody out there has enough experience to point me in the right direction. I have been working on my 1998 4 cylinder 2.5 l Ford Ranger XLT regular cab 5 speed It starts pretty rough and runs pretty rough as well. It eats up a ton of gas right now. (A quarter tank in just 30 miles) I'm still troubleshooting because I don't know quite what is wrong with it to be able to fix it. However I got a big clue but I'm still not sure what it means. I unpluged one of the vacuum lines from the EGR valve and the engine starded running better. I plugged it back in while the engine was running and it stalled and died immediately. My first guess was to replace the EGR valve but that did nothing. Still have the same result. No check engine light=No codes Work so far: Spark plugs Spark plug wires Ignition coils EGR valve Mass air flow sensor IAC valve Vacuum lines

Have a look at your evap solenoid. My sons 1999 XLT was slurping fuel at a phenomenal rate until he unhooked the evap solenoid. His MPG improved drastically. So, he got a used one at the local Pull-A-Part for five bucks and all is good now. Try pulling the vacuum line on the evap solenoid that comes FROM the engine. Plug the line and see how it runs and fuel economy. The solenoid is located on the driver side right near the ABS pump.
