Just picked up this 94 4x4 - five speed. the gears in the tranny seem to be a bit high for a 4x4 - dang thing hauls but on steep terrain and such, i am not sure. can i find a tranny with lower gear ratios? Thanks Alex

you would be better off changing the diff gears. look on the door tag for an axle code to see what gears you have. also, what size tires? stock? check here for the axle code list. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Axles.html
Tell us about the truck ^^^ and then someone can tell you what is needed to be done ? Larger tires mean higher final drive ratio and less power.
First determine the axle ratio.. Raise one side of rear wheel. Mark drive line near the rear yoke with a 4-5 inch horizontal line. Release park brake and place shifter in neutral. Make mark on wheel pointing at the earth. Slowly turn wheel a single revolution while counting the drive line turns. A ratio of 4:10 equals The drive line turning 4 complete turns and just a bit more. This method is 100% accurate on any rear axle. Frank
